How the Intelligent Brake & Reverse System Works

If you own a newer Sea-Doo, you've probably seen the term iBR — and if you're here because your machine is displaying an iBR Error or iBR Fault, you may be wondering exactly what the system does.

iBR stands for Intelligent Brake & Reverse. It's Sea-Doo's electronically controlled system for handling braking, reverse and neutral.

How Does Sea-Doo iBR Work?

Unlike a car or ATV, a Sea-Doo doesn't use a transmission to switch between forward and reverse. The jet pump continues producing thrust in the same direction.

Instead, Sea-Doo uses an iBR gate, sometimes called the reverse bucket, positioned behind the jet pump nozzle.

An electronic iBR module and actuator moves this gate to redirect the jet pump's water flow. By changing the position of the gate, the Sea-Doo can produce forward movement, neutral, reverse and braking.

Forward The iBR gate is raised out of the jet stream, allowing the jet pump to provide normal forward thrust.
Neutral The gate partially redirects the water to balance thrust and help keep the Sea-Doo stationary.
Reverse The gate redirects the jet thrust, allowing the Sea-Doo to move backward.
Braking Pulling the iBR lever while travelling forward lowers the gate into the jet stream and redirects thrust to rapidly slow the watercraft.

What Happens When the Sea-Doo iBR System Has a Problem?

Because the iBR system controls important functions such as braking and reverse, the Sea-Doo continuously monitors its operation.

If the module, actuator, gate, wiring or position sensing isn't operating correctly, the machine may display an iBR Fault or iBR Error.

Common Sea-Doo iBR problems can include:

  • iBR ERROR or iBR FAULT displayed on the gauge
  • No reverse
  • No neutral
  • Sea-Doo stuck in forward or reverse
  • iBR gate not moving
  • Intermittent iBR operation
  • Clicking or unusual noises from the iBR actuator
  • Reduced or limited operation
Is Your Sea-Doo Showing an iBR Fault?

An iBR warning doesn't automatically mean you need a new module. Start by identifying the fault, symptoms and possible cause before replacing expensive parts.

Can a Sea-Doo iBR Module Be Repaired?

In some cases, yes. Replacing an entire Sea-Doo iBR assembly can be expensive, and depending on the type of failure, the existing module may be repairable.

The first step is determining whether the problem is actually inside the iBR module or whether an external problem — such as the gate, electrical supply, wiring or another component — is causing the fault.
