What Usually Goes Wrong With the Polaris 850 Patriot?

The Polaris 850 Patriot is a high-output two-cylinder snowmobile engine built for aggressive trail and mountain riding. When these engines fail, the repair path depends on what was damaged: pistons and cylinders, crankshaft and bearings, or a complete internal failure.

Low Compression

Hard starting, weak power, poor idle, or uneven compression can point to piston, ring, cylinder, or top-end wear.

Bottom-End Noise

Knocking, vibration, bearing noise, or metal debris can suggest crankshaft or bearing damage.

Major Engine Failure

Seizure, overheating, broken internals, or heavy damage may make a full reman engine the cleanest solution.

Choose the Right Repair Path

Not every failed 850 Patriot needs the same solution. This page helps you choose between repairing the top end, rebuilding the engine yourself, or replacing the motor with a UEW remanufactured shortblock.

1. Top End Repair

Best when the crankshaft and lower end are healthy, but the pistons, rings, or cylinders need attention.

2. Crankshaft / Bottom End Needed

If the crankshaft or bearings are damaged, the repair is moving closer to full engine replacement. Inspect the lower cases before deciding.

3. Drop-In Shortblock

Best when you want the fastest, cleanest solution with a remanufactured engine ready to install and warranty-backed peace of mind.

Core Charge Information

This engine may require a refundable core charge. For most 500cc–850cc snowmobile engines, UEW commonly uses a $1,000 refundable core charge. Your core must generally be returned complete, rebuildable, and matching the engine purchased. Final core approval depends on inspection.

Customers can usually choose to pay the core charge and have an in-stock item ship quickly, or send their core first for inspection before the order is completed.

Polaris 850 Patriot Engine FAQ

Do I need a full engine or just a top end?

If compression is low but the crankshaft, bearings, and lower end are healthy, a top-end repair may be enough. If there is crank noise, metal debris, case damage, or a severe failure, a shortblock may be the better solution.

Does UEW offer crankshaft options for the 850 Patriot?

Yes. Crankshaft options may be available depending on model and current inventory. Email UEW for the most recent information.

Is there a core charge?

Most 2-stroke snowmobile engines use a $1,000 refundable core charge. Cylinders and crankshafts may vary depending on the exact engine or product. Core approval depends on inspection.

Can UEW help confirm fitment?

Yes. Email your year, model, engine size, and any part numbers or photos you have. UEW can help confirm the correct replacement before ordering.
